We regularly attend local networking meetings in The Thames Valley and at a recent meeting a survey was carried out amongst 25 local SMEs to identify their key tips to running a successful business.
We'd like to share some of their top tips with you:
- Delegate? outsource those areas where you do not have the expertise internally
- People buy people ? make a good impression with people important to your business
- Communicate? keep staff, clients and contacts well informed
- Keep in touch with your customers - Loyalty cards can help retail businesses to stay in touch
- Embrace the wacky? be different it can work for you
- Focus? ensure your proposition is well defined and focused. A very broad offering can lead to confused messages
- When selling a technical service or product keep the message simple
- Strategic alliances work? talk with your competitors
- Introduce people who can benefit each other from working together
- Focus on delivering a quality service
- Give your marketing collateral to someone who does not know your business for their feedback
- Analyse the customers you are making money from and get rid of the others
- Have an action list? focus on achieving a minimum of 2 items from that list each day
- Don't B.S. (you know what we mean!)
- Don't forget existing clients
- Be friendly and approachable
- Be passionate and enthusiastic about your business
- Be a giver rather than a taker
- Be true to yourself
